"After Peyton’s boyfriend Reed, high on steroids, pushes her down the steps, jeopardizing her college scholarship, she moves from DC to Tennessee to escape his abuse and rehab her knee. Keeping the abuse a secret, Peyton has no intention of dating, but is drawn to Owen who has secrets of his own.

What I loved about BROKEN BEAUTIFUL HEARTS:

-Peyton was victimized, but she was never a victim. She firmly told Reed she wouldn’t date him if he juiced, never covered up for his abuse, never took crap from mean girls. She was strong in her sense of right and wrong.
-BROKEN BEAUTIFUL HEARTS was sex positive, strong in consent and contraception.
-Kami Garcia’s writing.
-The major and minor characters.
-Cutter the rehab/trainer

What I disliked:

-I hated the paternalistic approach Peyton’s uncle and male cousins treated her. It wasn’t southern charming, it was possessive and misogynistic under the guise of overprotection. Peyton did put them in their places, but it still creeped me out.

I’m usually not a romance fan, but BROKEN BEAUTIFUL HEARTS was much more than a love story. Friendship and support were at the heart of the story."

Broken Beautiful Hearts Kami Garcia Books Reviews

  •  I enjoyed Broken Beautiful Hearts as it was an honest portrayal of one young woman's struggle and journey of self discovery after a traumatic incident with a loved one. I thought this story was poignant, sweet and heartwarming. The underlying feeling of hope and a second chance after difficult circumstances was a prevalent theme which I enjoyed. I had a tremendous amount of respect and affection for Peyton after everything that happened to her and admired her strength and fortitude to continue. This was a great story!

When Peyton's future at playing collegiate level soccer is in jeopardy after a violent incident with an ex, she decides to escape the drama (and trauma) to live with her uncle and cousins. But when she meets a boy with a secret, an unintended attraction and connection is formed. But can she fully move forward to her future when she is forced to reconcile the truth of her past?

I enjoyed this story alot. The extended cast of characters were great and engaging. Furthermore I rooted for Peyton from the get go and thought Owen was a genuinely sweet and sexy hero. I enjoyed his story as much as Peyton's journey and while I did want more and an epilogue at the end it left a smile on my face and butterflies in my stomach. Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula
  • I don’t even know where to start with this review. I went in this book blind and by the end of chapter 1 I was hooked. I find myself attracted to books about domestic violence because I am a survivor and I NEED to know the victim makes it out okay. So for the first 40% I was turning the pages non stop. But then it got really boring, and Peyton was almost unbearable. There was a lot going on new love interest, bullying, unresolved grief, and adjusting to a new life post assault. This wasn’t a bad book, but for me there was just too much going on. I hate rating a book like this so low because the subject matter holds a place in my heart, but dang, I wanted to DNF A LOT.

  • Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for the opportunity to read and review Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia! Peyton and her mom have lived alone since her father was killed during a military mission. Peyton’s boyfriend, Reed, has been acting differently and seems to have a quick temper and mood swings often when he used to never be that way. Reed’s sister Tess is also Peyton’s best friend and when Peyton tries to discuss the changes in Reed with Tess, she becomes defensive. When Peyton finds out Reed’s secret and confronts him, Reed loses his temper and pushes Peyton. She falls down cement stairs and hurts her leg. Now she’s mourning the possibility of losing her soccer scholarship and her ruined relationships with Reed and Tess. She moves to Tennessee and stays with her uncle and his two teenage twin boys so she can recuperate, attend physical therapy and hopefully repair her leg. She gains new friends and works hard to recover the strength in her leg while learning to deal with Reed and the difficulties he’s caused. I don’t want to give anything away from the rest of the story but I devoured Broken Beautiful Hearts and I highly recommend it for any reader that enjoys young adult realistic fiction, 5 stars!

  • So my rating is actually 4.5. I really liked it, liked all the characters, the story line, and it's something different. My only problem was the sex scene. There was no point to it. It wasn't needed for the story. It was as if the author decided to put it in last minute. It also didn't change the relationship between the two characters. They continued to be in the grey area of friendship. In my opinion, it took away from the true story a girl having to learn how to trust herself and people again after what happened to her.
  • I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read (not emotionally, I cried). I can see why people had issues. This book isn’t perfect by any means. But it’s a good contemporary that hits hard. Unrealistic (but I don’t look for realistic when reading most of the time) but still good.

I loved all the characters I was supposed to love and hated those I was supposed to hate. And by hated, I mean HATED.

I wish the PTSD was developed a bit more in our main character but it was done well, in the opinion of someone who has never suffered from it.

I would love to see a spin off with the twins and their dad. I think it’d be an interesting story. I loved the Twins (even though they were uber cringeworthy).

The writing was fine, a lot of mistakes were noticed by me and others. But overall, I did enjoy the story. It was an easy read.
